Reveal, an investigative radio show and podcast, heard by more than 1 million people weekly on more than 500 public radio stations in the United States
A Voice Actor with North East Louisiana accent to speak in place of the “whistle-blower” interviewed, to protect their identity as they spoke out about a regional hospital crisis.
As an audiobook narrator I am well versed in finding accents for characters. It certainly didn’t hurt, in this case, that I was born in Shreveport, LA and still have family in the Winfield, Monroe, Ruston area of North Louisiana—the accent and cadence came easily to me. It was like I was hearing my Mamaw coming out of my mouth!
Medical knowledge and comfort with medical terminology used in the interview
As an actual medical professional, I was able to speak with authority and conviction on the topics covered and use medical terminology conversationally as in the original interview.
Live client directed session on Skype with part of the project recorded using a studio microphone and audio equipment and part recorded using a phone to maintain the original sound of the recorded interview and subsequent phone conversations.
I had the original “whistle-blower” interview recording and transcript ahead of time to prepare, so the project recording only took about an hour all together. The producer, audio engineer, and I were together on Skype first and then the phone patch later. The project was completed on time and the producer was pleased with the outcome.
Medical narration is a highly specialized field that requires a unique blend of clarity, precision, and empathy. The goal is to convey complex medical information in a way that is easily understandable to both professionals and laypeople.
One of the key aspects of medical narration is the expertise required to accurately pronounce medical terminology and understand the content being narrated. A narrator with a strong background in healthcare or medical sciences can convey the information accurately and authoritatively. This expertise builds trust with the audience, whether they are medical professionals seeking continuing education or patients looking for information about a new drug or treatment.
Medical information is often intricate and detailed, requiring a narrator who can maintain clarity and precision throughout the recording. This involves clear enunciation, appropriate pacing, and the ability to emphasize key points without sounding monotonous. The narrator must also be adept at modulating their tone to match the seriousness of the subject matter, ensuring the delivery is engaging yet respectful.
In addition to technical skills, a good medical narrator must possess empathy. Healthcare content can often be sensitive, dealing with topics such as chronic illness, treatment options, and patient care. An empathetic narrator can make a significant difference in how this information is received, providing comfort and reassurance to listeners. This emotional connection is vital in patient-facing materials, where the aim is to inform and support individuals during potentially challenging times.
Collaborating with the right Voice Talent can make all the difference in having this kind of challenging content clearly communicated and understood by your audience. My background makes me a great choice for your Medical Narration, eLearning, Device Explainer, Professional Training or Pharmaceutical commercial.
I started out in nursing with hands-on patient care, then moved into medical imaging, then taught Medical Imaging, Physics, and Radiobiology at the college level. My professional certification by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography (X-Ray), Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) ensures not only a competent read of the technical and clinical terms but also an astute understanding of the material in order to communicate your message clearly.
